One of the most important criteria by which you can determine if a job is good or satisfactory, besides the obvious ones like money or work schedule, is the fact that you can make a clear delimitation between your profession and your free time. The work-life balance is a crucial indicator of the quality of life, regardless of your job, but sometimes things are easier said than done. For example, if you manage a business, you must be available 24/7, in case something happens and you have to make a quick decision, that could impact dozens, maybe even hundreds of people.
Another example in this sense is represented by a local handyman. We’re talking about a highly-trained professional who has the role of repairing everything that breaks down in the houses or around the houses of his neighbors, but also of strangers, within a radius of several kilometers or even tens of kilometers. But what about the things that break down in his own house? It would be logical for him to fix those too, right? That’s exactly what we wanted to know when we interviewed such an employee from Home & Business Services – HBSOnTime.com!
What do you do for a living?
I’m a local handyman from Home & Business Services, a family-owned local business operating in the Greater Fredericksburg Area, VA since 2013. They offer professional cleaning services (residential, commercial, carpets, air ducts, windows), home maintenance, turnkey services, and handyman services. I’m specialized in the latter.
What does a local handyman do, more precisely?
The list is quite long: I install and repair cabinets, carpentry (molding), drywalls, ceramic tiles, doors, dryer vents, flooring, insulation, windows, etc. I also repair ceilings, decks, I fix fences, I’m also dealing with small remodeling & updating projects (for example, in basements, bathrooms, kitchens, storage areas, etc.).
The most important question: do you fix things at home too?
Of course, you realize that it would be strange to tell my wife: “Call a local handyman!”. She would obviously reply: “But that’s YOU!”. The main difference is that, at home, things don’t have to be fixed in a few hours or a few days, depending on the severity & complexity of the problem. I can take my time about it if it’s not urgent.
Do you never get bored with this job?
I’m not always excited about having to fix things at home after I fixed things all day for a living, you can imagine. But the local handyman job doesn’t really allow you to get bored because you have to always be on the alert, to take action quickly if there is something to repair. But I’m not complaining, I chose this, it’s what I know how to do.
Last question: for which repairs do you pay more attention?
You really put your finger on it with this question! As a local handyman, I ALWAYS have to pay attention to what I’m doing, otherwise, I will make a mistake. So there is no question whether I should be more focused when I’m at my client’s place or at home. I have to have the same professionalism everywhere, of course!
