Pune is just 150 kilometres from the “city of dreams,” Mumbai, yet it has failed to produce any cricket greats on par with their counterparts in Mumbai. People’s mind immediately goes to Kedar Jadhav, and no one else. And yet, Ruturaj Gaikwad may soon need to be added to that group.
He was born to Savita and Dashrath Gaikwad on January 31, 1997. At the young age of 5, Ruturaj had already begun playing cricket with a leather ball. On a trip to Pune in 2003, Ruturaj stopped by Nehru Stadium to see the New Zealand–Australia match. The six-year-interest-old’s in cricket was piqued when he saw Brendon McCullum scoop Australian fast bowlers.
To reach his or her greatest potential, every athlete, no matter how promising their skill, requires mentoring. And that’s just what 11-year-old Ruturaj received when he enrolled at the Vengsarkar Cricket Academy in Pune. After a short time, he was playing for the Maharashtra U-14 and U-16 teams.
The Vengsarkar academy continues to play a significant part in his growth by providing him with open access to their facilities whenever he feels the need.
While in the PCMC (Pimpri-Chinchwad) region, Ruturaj attended the Vengsarkar Cricket Academy.
He had lived there for the last decade, starting when was 11 years old. In every aspect, they’ve been there to lend a hand and cheer on. He ask them to let him practice now, they still do it.
Gaikwad, Ruturaj During his time as a member of the U-19 squad, batsman Ruturaj Gaikwad drew a lot of attention, ultimately placing second in scoring in the 2014-2015 Cooch Behar Trophy. He had 826 runs, including three centuries and a half-century, in six games.
In the 2015 Maharashtra Invitation Tournament, he got a triple century while also contributing to a 522-run partnership. With the aid of his performances, he was included in the India U-19 probables for the 2016 U-19 Cricket World Cup.

At the age of 19, Ruturaj made his first-class debut for the Ranji squad of Maharashtra in 2016-17. After getting struck by a delivery from Varun Aaron, his Ranji debut against Jharkhand was cut short. He missed the Ranji season because he had to have surgery.
After resting for eight weeks, Ruturaj made his return in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, albeit he was limited to participating in just one game. Ruturaj announced his potential as an ODI opening batter the next season. Against Himachal Pradesh, the rookie batsman got his first List A century, a 132-run knock in 110 balls.
In his first seven games, he scored 444 runs at an average of 63, making him Maharashtra’s top batsman in the competition. The next season, Ruturaj was a mainstay on the Maharashtra Ranji squad, as he amassed 342 runs while playing in only 10 matches.

However, he was not quite as effective in the limited-overs format as he had been the previous season. Ruturaj scored 330 runs in 7 games at the 2017-18 Vijay Hazare Trophy, although he was unable to finish off any of his starts.
As a member of the Board President’s XI, Ruturaj batted a hundred in January 2019 against the England Lions. This inning was the deciding factor in his first-ever inclusion in the India A team, for an upcoming ODI series against Sri Lanka A in June of 2019.
