The origin of BIM is dated to the early 70s when the first 3D software tools were developed for modeling buildings. The concept continued to evolve over the years. By the late 80s, new products had been developed that included advanced features. In the early days of BIM, there was a rivalry between the Eastern Bloc and Western economies.

Many countries were trying to create a program that would eliminate the need for blueprints. Since then, a continued effort has been made to consolidate different design and engineering software packages to create a cohesive 3D model. BIM is a term that can be traced back to Gijsbers and his proposal for integrated building design.

In the late 1970s and early 1980s, the first software tools developed for modeling buildings emerged. Workstation products such as Chuck Eastman’s Building Description System and GLIDE, RUCAPS, Sonata, Reflex, and Gable 4D Series were also included.

It’s a term thrown around in the design and construction industries for years. It is a broad topic that should be used and explained to those who aren’t directly involved in the industry. We want to make that exciting story more accessible to everyone.

Who Invented The BIM?

In 1975, Charles Eastman’s groundbreaking paper on parametric design, high-quality computable 3D representations, and a “one integrated database for visual and quantitative analysis” was published. Not only did Eastman discuss these notions in his paper, but he also created a program that provided users with a sortable list. This list allowed users to easily access and compare the information.

Contemporary Approaches In BIM

Some people have a negative attitude toward BIM services and parametric design. They think that parametric modeling is too complex for them to understand, and they limit the value of software products to their users’ knowledge of the program. But this can be avoided by using a program that is easy to use. These programs focus on parametric flexibility and sculpting geometry. This program supports NURBS surfaces and has spawned a revolution in design with the power to iterate and transform incredibly complex and provocative architectural forms.

This advantage can enable a novice designer who has just learned how to perform basic commands to become an incredibly prolific producer. At the same time, a highly experienced and educated architect can be crippled by inexperience with a program’s interface or underlying concepts. This creates space for the potential for a generational break line that becomes harsher as new technologies gain market parity in architecture design.

Moreover, architectural BIM services can help in transforming plans into three-dimensional shapes. There is a lot of design freedom which is great for the clients.

The Development of the BIM Software

RADAR CH, the longest continuously sold BIM architectural design program, was first introduced on the Macintosh in 1984. It later evolved into ArchiCAD.

In 2002, AutoDesk purchased Revit, and with new backing, Revit quickly became synonymous with BIM itself. Revit’s advances – parametric families, construction phase control, scheduling, and a visual programming environment – would transform the market. In 2007 AutoDesk also purchased companies such as NavisWorks. Format, an app that allowed the creation of a BIM model on a mobile device, was released in late 2012.

Pro/ENGINEER was released in 1988 and is considered the first commercially available parametric modeling design program in BIM history. BIM engineers typically use the Revit Architecture program but may also use Revit MEP, Revit Structure, and Nevisworks.

BIM and Its Applications in Architectural Engineering

  • The first commercial computer-aided machining (CAM) software was developed by MIT. Sketchpad was a popular CAD program that used a graphical user interface (GUI).
  • Building Description System (BDS) was developed by Bethany College for architecture students.
  • In 1977, GLIDE was released as a 2D CAD program, allowing users to easily create designs and drawings.
  • Radar CH was released in 1984 as the first 3D modeling software.
  • Vectorworks was released in 1985 and could do everything RADAR CH could, plus more.
  • Universal Computer-Aided Production System (CAPS) was developed in 1986, allowing users to create different models and renderings of their projects.
  • ArchiCAD was released in 1987, allowing users to build architectural models using planes and solid objects.
  • Pro/ENGINEER came out in 1992 and revolutionized the design industry; it allowed users to quickly create complex models.
  • Building Information Model as the official term was coined by the United Kingdom government in 1993. It’s used today throughout Europe and many other countries worldwide.

BIM is considered a significant step forward for the construction industry because it’s able to provide accurate data about construction projects without relying on drawings or manual entries

The Conclusion

BIM is a broad topic and can be challenging to define. There are multiple definitions of BIM within the industry. Still, a widely accepted one is a process that integrates information from all project participants and provides seamless data integration for the collaborative design of any building asset. Regardless of our definition or opinion about BIM, it’s essential to acknowledge that this innovative technology is here to stay and has tremendous potential for growth in the construction community.
